About Accardi Foods
Antonio Accardi emigrated from Sicily to the United States in the early
1900’s, continuing his trade of blending and packing
olive oil, in the North End of Boston. In 1942 John DeVirgilio married
into the Accardi family and joined his father-in-law in the
growing Accardi Company as a salesperson.
Antonio Accardi passed away at an early age, and John DeVirgilio stepped
into the position of running the family business successfully,
until the Boston Redevelopment Authority took over the property on
Commercial Street in 1962. Although it was a
difficult decision, John decided to close the family business, and
he began a sales career within the food industry for another
company.
In 1972 John DeVirgilio and his son, Anthony, founded a food distribution
enterprise and named it John Accardi & Co., carrying
on the legacy that Antonio Accardi had begun many years before. Initially
focusing on selling retail products to the many Italian
grocers in the Greater Boston Area, the product mix soon grew to include
the best-known brands from Italy. Accardi & Co. began
to service restaurants.
John DeVirgilio Jr. joined the company soon after, following in his
father’s footsteps, focusing on sales. Marie Cooke soon joined
her father and brothers, handling all aspects of office management.
The newly named John Accardi & Sons was fast becoming a
dominant force as the master importer in New England for the most prestigious
brands from Italy.
Over the years, as Accardi grew from a small operation of only 2
people, to one of the largest specialty food distributors in
New England, the primary focus has been to maintain a superior level
of quality products and service. At the 75,000 square
foot warehouse and office facility in Medford, over 3000 products
are inventoried and 60 employees work together everyday to
ensure that our customers receive the service they have grown to
expect. The test kitchen, used to sample new products, has
been host to many local chefs that have enjoyed captive audiences
as they demonstrate their skills.
We are committed to providing our customers with quick delivery and
product reliability as we continue to service the many
fine restaurants, caterers, specialty food stores, and supermarkets
of New England.
